There is an unpretentious beauty to Jura that makes it one of the most magical places in Britain. Jura is not far from the mainland (5 miles off the west coast of Scotland) but its small population (just over 200 at last count), its near-uninhabitable west coast, the single (and single-track) road, and its lack of visible large-scale commercial activity all suggest otherwise.
Jura is where George Orwell sought solitude to write 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' and, more bizarrely, where KLF burned a million dollars. These days it's home to the popular Jura
Fells Race (at the end of May), the unmissable Jura Music Festival (in September) and the eponymous Jura Whisky. The island is a haven for wildlife: red deer, otters, wild goats, seals, eagles and many other species of bird and animal are regularly spotted.
From the picturesque and challenging Paps to the raised beaches of Loch Tarbert; from the dangerous Corryvreckan whirlpool to the beautiful gardens of Jura House; if you love fresh air and the outdoors you will feel at home on Jura.

"Jura is a hidden gem, somewhat harder to reach than many places in the UK but definitely worth a visit. The Jura Hotel provides a very warm
welcome, with a family-feel where nothing is too much trouble for the owners and staff. The rooms are warm and comfortable and pleasingly free of TV and radio. The food is very good indeed and there is wide selection of the finest elixirs in the Bar/Restaurant from the Jura Distillery nearby. The folk of the island welcome visitors to this unique and tranquil place and the hotel is a good base from which to walk and/or explore the long road..."
