The Corryvreckan Whirlpool

The Corryvreckan Whirlpool is famous around the world. As a result of the complex tidal system around the mainland and the Inner Hebrides coupled with steep underwater gradients, the Corryvreckan whirlpool is said to be the second most dangerous in the world! Furthermore, the Corryvreckan has claimed lives and boats throughout history. George Orwell got into bother in 1947, and in 1820 the PS Comet was wrecked by the power it beholds. Although the Corryvreckan is still officially unnavigable, competent local captains run boat trips here now.

Visiting the Corryvreckan whirlpool by boat when here on Jura

Are happy to leave dry land? Then Jura Boat Tours offers a popular 3-hour trip to see this wonder. Here you will learn how this powerful section of water forms its dangerous whirlpool with its tumultuous currents. Departure times aim to work with the tides. This is to make sure you get to see it at its best. However, this cannot always be guaranteed. Additionally, on this tour, you will get to see an active nesting site for the White Tailed Eagle. As well as this you will also pass the famous Barnhill, famously known as the place where George Orwell wrote his best-selling novel!

Visiting the Corryvreckan whirlpool by land

Alternatively, you can see the Corryvreckan whirlpool from dry land. Important to point out is this is not a straightforward way to see the whirlpool as there is no road. Once you arrive on Jura head to Craighouse. From here continue through to the end of ‘The Long Road’. This is one hour from our hotel The Jura Hotel. There is a small car park. Along the way (about 4 miles in) you will pass Barnhill. Another 3 miles from here to the north of Jura you will arrive at the Corryvreckan. Before embarking upon this adventure make sure you check tide tables first. This is to ensure there is something to see as at times the waters can be quite calm. It is the tides that force this phenomenon into action!
